I'm going to do a little proud-Dad bragging.
This past Feb we started our youngest daughter, Shelby, with tennis. We suspected right away that she might have found "her thing." So this summer we signed her up for a state-wide Colorado youth tennis program. This past week she competed in the girl's singles 10 and under state tournament. With a few hundred girls competing, we didn't expect much. But she kept winning. This past Friday she made it to the championship game. We couldn't believe it. She was matched against a girl from Russia - really - no kidding. (Malonovich was her last name). It had an international feel. The Russian girl was bigger and had been playing a few years, but Shelby had already beaten other girls like that.
The first girl to win 9 games would be crowned state champ. Shelby lost the first game, but we didn't worry. She had lost almost all her first games in every match. It takes her a game or two to gain her confidence. She kicked into gear and won the match 9-5. She won the whole stinking thing! She is my new retirement plan.
First congrats to Shelby! Tennis is a great sport. I played a couples years in college, still play today and have transferred my love for it to my boys. My middle son Micah is now playing tennis in his first year of college for Southwest Baptist University. Not sure it is my retirement play, but I will not get tired of watching him play. Enjoy watching Shelby play, win or lose. My youngest son Sam, who is now an 8th grader avidly plays also. He is looking forward to high school tennis. Great game and congrat to Shelby BIG time for her win!!
