God’s calling on my life is to strengthen you. One of the best ways I can do this is to encourage you to meet with God regularly. With that in mind, let’s make a commitment to read through the Bible together this year. I have created this portion of my blog to help keep us on track.
Here is what you can expect:
1. We will read the Bible in chronological order. I have found that the Bible makes more sense when I read it in chronological order. The Prophets, Psalms, and Epistles come to life when seen in their historical and cultural context. It flows into a master plot. So I will post the scriptures week to week in chronological order.
2. We will focus on a verse (or phrase) each week that penetrates our hearts. We will read through chapters each week, but within those chapters we will focus on one verse or phrase. The emphasis here is not reading through the Bible, but having the Bible read through you (Hebrews 4:12). This type of reading is called Lectio Divina (divine reading), and Christians who have sought to draw close to God have practiced it for centuries.
3. The first day of each month is “Grace Day.” When you try to read through the Bible and you fall behind a few days or weeks, it is tempting to totally give up. To prevent you from giving up, the first day of each month you can wipe the slate clean and just pick up where you should be. No harm, no foul. Just keep going.
4. Encourage other people to join you. I don’t know about you, but nothing helps me more in practicing spiritual disciplines (like this) than doing it with other people. Accountability with you friends is key. (Not to mention that they need your support too).
I hope you will join me.
